Outdoor Sports For Exercising Dogs
Some of the best ways to exercise dogs are to take them outside for some serious outdoor adventures
. Whether the dog's owner likes skiing, biking, running or Roller blading, any of these activities could include the dog, too!
One way to add extra exercise into the dog's routine is to purchase a backpack for the dog. When the dog wears a pack he is going to automatically get more tired just from carrying an extra few pounds around. Backpacks are good for days when the walk can't be very long.
It's good to keep the weight of the pack to about 10 percent of the dog's body weight, so about 6 pounds for a 60-pound dog. Water bottles, bags of sand, books or pretty much anything can be used to put some weight in the pack.
Another way to tire the dog out is to take the dog along on a long hike. Not only can the dog wear his backpack, but he will get some extra miles under his paws and hopefully get the chance to run off leash. All dogs enjoy this freedom from time to time.
All breeds will benefit from going from a good, long run or jog during all weather. For dogs that get cold during the winter, dog booties and dog coats can make a big difference.
Really, outdoor sports for dogs include whatever the human is doing. One sport that is often overlooked when it comes to the dogs is biking. A bike leash such as the WalkyDog works great for keeping the dog in place along side of the bike.
The bike leash will keep the dog out of trouble if he wants to chase a squirrel or if he normally gets excited when he sees other dogs. The Walky Dog works by allowing the person to keep both hands on the bike rather than hold onto the dog's leash. This prevents accidents.
Some people prefer Roller blading instead of biking. This is a lot like taking the dog for a run, only the dog gets to go a lot faster, and the person won't have to break into quite a sweat. It's a little more dangerous though, so people who own dog's that like to pull or lunge or chase should be extra careful.
Some tips for staying safe while Roller blading or biking with a dog include: Taking the dog out during quieter times of the week, slowly introducing the dog to the bike or Roller blades and being consistent.
If the dog is allowed to pull while on a normal walk, then he is going to think he can pull while Roller blading as well, or the other way around. A good owner will teach the dog to remain at her side and not be out in front and pulling.
There are even outdoor sports designed specifically for dogs such as dog agility and dog dock jumping. These are fun competitions that allow dogs of all levels to compete. Dogs love to show off their skills!
