Outside Lands Music Festival Tickets - 2010's Hot Lineup
Festival season is here, and major festivals Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits are coming up
. But in the Bay Area, a relatively younger festival is getting indie-rock fans excited: the Outside Lands Music Festival. This two-day event brings San Francisco music fans together to watch a host of awesome bands in Golden Gate Park-once known to the city as the "Outside Lands."
Of course, that was a very long time ago. The "Outside Lands" were open sand wastes on the edge of San Francisco in the late 1800s that were eventually incorporated into the city limits. It wasn't really expected that anything impressive would ever develop there, but in time, it grew into what is now known as the Sunset District and the fabulous Golden Gate Park, where this annual event has been held since being inaugurated in 2008.
Since then, the festival has brought a wide and eclectic range of artists to perform here. During its first year Outside Lands was a three-day weekend event featuring, Radiohead, Beck, Tom Petty, Jack Johnson, Wilco and Broken Social Scene. In 2009 it was only one day but featured Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Tenacious D and Incubus.
In 2010, the festival has expanded back out to two days, but there is a host of great artists to see. The headliners include Further, a collaboration between Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. They're the perfect classic rock pairing to catch in a place like San Francisco. New York indie-rockers the Strokes will be working fans up into a tizzy, and the electro dance-rock of French act Phoenix will get people on their feet as well. Meanwhile Kings of Leon will offer more of a down-home, country-folk feel.
Social Distortion, always a classic headliner, will be performing this year, as well, though they're likely to be preceded by gospel kind the Rev. Al Green, which makes for a rather strange pairing. More than likely, no one will complain. There's a little something for everyone at this festival. If you like quieter, singer-songwriter material, than check out Cat Power. If you want to jump in a mosh pit and hear something with more energy, be present for Gogol Bordello's unique gypsy-punk fusion. Wolfmother is a throwback to the age of big, proggy arena rock, while the electro-synth stylings of Empire of the Sun may be more your thing if you want music with more of a modern pop flavor to it.
Overall, the festival has a lot to offer on its lineup alone-but these are just the headliners. Remember that there are also a ton of bands that you've probably never heard of that are looking to get their big break here. It's always fun to go out and randomly pick an act, perhaps discovering a new favorite band as a result. With the broad mix of music that can be found here, you can't go wrong.
