You come walking into an outsourcing relationship

. Your company has hired a service provider like a virtual assistant. Now what?

Well, just like any employee-employer relationship, you as the employer set the goals, the guidelines, and the policies. The employee will listen, accept and do what you ask them to do. Very simple and precise.

Unfortunately, the reality of it is, a lot of companies complain that they are not getting the service that they are paying for. On the other side of the coin comes in the virtual assistant, getting disappointed and frustrated because they do not know where to begin, how to begin, and how to end. Why? Because there was a failure in communication.

Virtual assistants have one disadvantage, and so does your company. You never get to see yourselves face to face and talk or hash things over like schedules and such. So the best thing to do is to make a written policy and what your expectations are. Also, if you have a project for your VA to do, make sure that there are clear and precise instructions on how the project is to be completed.


The last, make the deadlines clear to the VA, do not surprise them and expect them to fill the void with excellent work.

There are some VAs who will not mind the extra work out of the usual schedule, especially if your company is the main client and is relied on for most of their income. But what happens if your company did not just hire one single person as a VA, what if your company hired a service company? This is the logic behind the work schedule.

Service provider companies cater to a lot of clients and they will not be happy if you disrupt their schedules which can make things difficult for their other clients. If you do not have a clear schedule to begin with, remember that it is important to inform the service provider that your schedule can be erratic and you'll be surprised that you will also be catered by these providers. They will make sure that they have one VA who will be on standby most of the time to cater to your needs. The only downfall, you may have to pay more. But if it benefits your schedule, it will be worth it.
