Ovarian Cysts And The Causes
Most women will get ovarian cysts at one time or another and most usually go away
on their own after a few weeks or after one or two menstrual cycles with or without pain or symptoms. Ovarian cysts can only be diagnosed with an ultrasound by a doctor or through periodic pelvic exam. This article discusses ovarian cysts and the causes and how they affect you.
What are ovarian cysts?
These are usually fluid filled sacs also known as follicles, but in a few cases some may comprise hair, bone and other matter for more serious cases of ovarian cysts. They usually occur within the reproductive organs of women, i.e. the ovaries.
Some may be painful if the cyst bursts or becomes large. Some woman may experience discomfort in the lower pelvic region and may also lead to infertility in women of child bearing age in some cases.
Most ovarian cysts are known as functional cysts and usually dissolve on their own sometimes without the woman being aware of their existence. Most of these types of cysts are benign i.e. non cancerous. Ovarian cysts occurring in a young girl who has not yet had her first menstrual cycle or in a post menopausal woman may be cause for concern as these may be cancerous.
Most however are functional cysts. In order to decide on a plan of action once cysts have been diagnosed, one has to determine the cause. It is important to note that there is no single cause of ovarian cysts. However, the following factors may trigger the condition.
Primary causes of ovarian cysts:
These primary causes can lead to ovarian cysts in isolation or as a combination of two or more of the following factors as well as other factors not addressed in this article.
1. Genetics
If you have a family history of chronic ovarian cysts sufferers, this may increase your risk of getting them frequently. In many cases, the risk may be reduced by changes in the environment and lifestyle changes.
2. Diet
A diet rich in processed foods and other foods lacking nutritional value can weaken the immune system that when functioning properly helps the body fight off diseases and infections. These types of foods that are also usually high in sugar content, also lead to a hormonal imbalance which in combination with a weakened immune system can lead to the formation of ovarian cysts.
At the same time, a diet low in fiber can lead to toxins remaining in the body a lot longer than they should and not being flushed out further aggravating ovarian cysts. Additionally, not being sufficiently hydrated by drinking plenty of water, further aggravates current cysts.
3. Insulin
Insulin is the hormone made by the pancreas that turns glucose (from sugars and carbohydrates consumed) into energy required by the various cells in body in order to function properly.
If the body maintains high levels of glucose (which may lead to diabetes), the pancreas' production of insulin is increased to deal with this high level of insulin and vice versa when glucose levels are low. It is important to properly maintain blood sugar levels mainly to avoid diabetes 2 complications as well as other health conditions.
When related to ovarian cysts, a high level of insulin production can lead to the production of ovarian androgen which leads to the production of the male hormone testosterone. This leads to the reduction of the serum sex hormone binding globulin or SHGB which in turn aggravates the condition.
4. Failed ovulation
Hormonal imbalance may develop when the ovaries fail to release an egg on a monthly basis for fertilization or elimination by the body, which then continues to grow in the ovaries without being released. This usually leads to the formation of cysts. If these rupture, they can cause significant pain and discomfort.
Various other toxins in the body or the environment can also aggravate the condition. This is a complex condition and is not simple to understand or treat. Conventional medicine only treats the cysts and not the root cause. Treatment usually comprises prescription medication or surgery which can become quite expensive. Holistic or natural approaches are becoming more popular because they seek to get to the root cause of the cysts and treat the root cause to treat current cysts and prevent future cyst
