Cysts on ovaries are small sacs that are filled with fluid that form on the ovaries

. These can affect women of all ages and most are considered non cancerous and disappear on their own. Some are found to be cancerous and need treatment to be removed. The childbearing years are when they most likely do strike and but there are many different types of cysts that can form.

The follicular cyst is simple type that forms when ovulation doesn't occur or when a mature follicle collapses on itself. When this type of cyst ruptures, it can cause sharp sever pain on the side of the ovary where it appears. This pain usually appears during ovulation and these types tend to disappear by themselves in a few months.

When the endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus, this can cause endometriomas cysts. These are formed by the cells of the lining of the uterus and are filled with dark blood. Endometriosis is generally the result of this. A cyst like this can become quite big and grow if left untreated.

A hemorrhagic cyst is when the eggs sac or surrounding tissue fills with blood because of a tiny tear in the ovary. These cysts don't always rupture, if they do it causes a burning sensation through the pelvic region. In general, these do not require treatment and reabsorb within a few months, and most women experience this at some point in their lives.

A type of benign tumor is the dermoid cyst and can be called a mature cystic teratoma. This generally occurs in young women and is an abnormal cyst. These types of cysts can contain growth tissues inside like bone, fat, hair, and cartilage. When these cysts become inflamed and twist around, they cause severe abdominal pain because they cut off their own blood supply.

When the corpus luteum, an ovarian gland, malfunctions, a corpus luteum cyst can be formed. This gland readies the uterus for a pregnancy after the release of an egg, but if that doesn't happen, the gland is supposed to disintegrate. If it doesn't, then a fluid filled cyst formed that stays in the ovary. Normally, these disappear on without treatment.
