Overcoming Disappointments
When we were young, everything was possible. When we'd grow up we could be a jet pilot, an astronaut a physician an Olympic athlete or whatever. We would have sport cars, big houses and earn astronomical salaries. We would be kings and the world was going to be our oyster.
Those were magical times when everything was possible. However, for most of us, a harsher reality sat in. We had a few failures and setbacks and we found ourselves to be no longer invincible. Some of our dreams were shattered and we were hurt in the process. So, instead of concentrating on more empowering ways of achieving our goals, we simply decided to stifle our dreams and accept the norm of our peers and settle for a life bordering on mediocrity.
What a tragedy, what a waste.
The cure for that is to instill a little insanity in our life. Why not? After all, sanity is defined as sharing a common reality. What if we decide not to share other's reality? What could be wrong with that?
What if we decide to ignore the boundaries that society tries to impose upon us? What would that make us?
It would simply allow us to join the remarkable few who chose to dream, who chose to dare and chose to become the outstanding success that they are today.
Before they ever achieved great success, most movers and shakers were considered to be lunatics, eccentrics and sometimes downright fools. How do you think that Barack Obama was first perceived when he declared that he wanted to be President of the United States? He was black, he had no money and he had no connections. Can't you see a slight touch of insanity here or a vision of a reality that was not shared?
We need a little insanity in our life. We need to dare to think differently. To dare to dream the impossible dream. To dare to get off the beaten path. To live in a world of possibilities that we have created for ourselves and that may not be shared by others.
Steve Jobs, co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc. said it best in his Commencement address at Stanford University when he closed that remarkable speech with this invaluable admonition, "Stay hungry. Stay foolish."
Stay hungry. Stay foolish. Add a little insanity in your life and watch wonders unfold.
