Overview Of Computer Monitors

Computer monitors are simply the computers electronic visual display devices and in most cases are also referred to as computer video displays

. They are part of computer out put devices which is a general class that contains other different peripherals like computer printers and laser systems among others. Originally, monitors were meant for data processing but as time passed and technology improved, they are today being used for both data processing and for entertainment.

In the market today there are three types of computer monitors the LCD monitors, OLED monitors and the cathode ray tube mostly known as CRT. Uses of the term 'monitor dates back to the earlier days when computer was first used. Generally the system operators used it in monitoring the whole computer system hence the term monitor came into use. The first computer monitors were mainly CRTs which were widely used until the 21st century. Their production is still at large as they are still being preferred by most people and this is because they are generally cheap and easy to manufacture. Most people also like CRTs because they offer approximately 180 degrees viewing angle.

LCD (liquid crystal display) computer monitors are generally an improvement to the CRTs. This is because they are light in weight, take small space and consume less power. LCD monitors were first used in laptops and because of their relatively expensive production costs; the prices of the laptops could not be cheaper. There are different variants of LCD monitors which are in use but the most common one is the TFT. The TFT-LCD technology is currently considered the best as it is more advantageous over other variants and one of its advantages is the fact that it has less flickering therefore can be used for long with naked eye as it reduces eye strain. The battle between LCD and CRT monitors is still at large as most people believe that the difference is all about fashion. Even though LCD monitors are stylish and fashionable in nature they may not be the best type to offer a solution for you.

There is another type of monitor in the market that most people are probably not aware of. It is known as the OLED (organic light emitting diode) monitor. Computer makers are currently predicting that very soon the LCD monitors will be replaced with OLED monitors. The advantage that OLED monitors have over their LCD colleagues is the fact that they offer better viewing angles and higher contrast.

Because computers today does not only serve the purpose originally meant for them but also doubles up as an entertainment devices, there are several basic factors to consider while shopping for computer monitors. Some of these factors include brightness, contrast, weight and size, color, screen burn and viewing angle. Considering all these factors, you will only go for the degree that favors you. For example if you dont care about weight and size because you will be using your computer in a permanent work station then you can as well go for a CRT monitor. Sometimes your personal circumstances like how much cash you are willing to spend may also dictate which type of monitor to purchase.
