Eric Wood from London, England, was the first person to devise the technology for curing pipe in place in 1971

. He used the Latin words that mean "form in place," insit u form, to name the procedure and applied for a US patent in 1975. The patent was granted two years later, and after 17 years, it entered the public domain. Several companies now offer this method of curing for sewer line repair as well as for restoring different types of pipelines without digging.

Cured in place pipe, or CIPP, provides a means of fixing pipes without digging a trench to reach the bad pipe. One of the methods of rehabilitating an existing pipeline is to use a cured in place CIPP lining in the damaged pipe. CIPP does not have seams or joints, and it inserts inside pipes ranging from 4 inches to 110 inches in diameter. The CIPP method is widely employed to rehabilitate pipes that carry gas, chemicals, water or sewage and is very effective in restoring them with little or no digging. The ordinary method of digging up a pipe and replacing it requires more time and is not environmentally friendly.

The CIPP process uses a felt tube saturated with resin and made of polyester. Technicians pull the tube into a broken pipe and cure the resin with UV light, ambient cure, steam or hot water. This forms a replacement pipe with a smooth interior that is resistant to corrosion, fits tightly and has no joints. The technicians then employ robotically controlled cutting mechanisms to repair service laterals internally. They use additional seals into the lateral connection for lateral junction repair, and they use closed-circuit television, or CCTV, to inspect the rehabilitated pipe. This trenchless technology is often used for sewer line repair.

The technology that provides for the implementation of trenchless sewer pipe replacement does not require excavating to restore the pipeline. Installation of the cured in place CIPP lining is often accomplished through a manhole or other existing entry point. Technicians can also rehabilitate lateral connections without digging by drilling a hole in the liner at the point of the connection using a remote controlled device. The CIPP process is very effective in decreasing leaks in pipelines without extensive excavation.
