The PC Support Specialist Diploma program, offered at the Academy of Learning Nanaimo

BC Career and Business College on Vancouver Island prepares students to deal with the problems they may encounter when supporting Personal Computers in an office environment. It provides in-depth knowledge of both computer hardware and software, and prepares students to take the CompTIA A+, Network+, and Server+ certification exams. Students will have practical hands-on experience in trouble shooting computer problems and assembling a computer.

In order to receive CompTIA A+ certification a candidate must pass two exams. The first exam is CompTIA A+ Essentials, exam number 220-701. The CompTIA A+ Essentials examination measures necessary competencies for an entry-level IT professional.

Successful candidates will have the knowledge required to understand the fundamentals of computer technology, networking, and security, and will have the skills required to identify hardware, peripheral, networking, and security components. Successful candidates will understand the basic functionality of the operating system and basic troubleshooting methodology, practice proper safety procedures, and will effectively interact with customers and peers.

The second exam for CompTIA A+ certification candidates to complete their certification in the 2009 Edition of CompTIA A+ is the CompTIA A+ 220-702 exam, Practical Application. The CompTIA A+ Practical Application exam measures the necessary competencies for an entry-level IT

professional. Successful candidates will have the skills required to install, configure, upgrade, and maintain PC workstations, the Windows OS and SOHO networks. The successful candidate will utilize troubleshooting techniques and tools to effectively and efficiently resolve PC, OS, and network connectivity issues and implement security practices. Job titles in some organizations which are descriptive of the role of this individual may be: Enterprise technician, IT administrator, field service technician, PC or Support technician, etc. Ideally, the CompTIA A+ Practical Application candidate has already passed the CompTIA A+ Essentials examination.

Skilled PC Support Specialists are in high demand in today's highly skilled environment. Virtually all organizations with multiple computers require the skills of PC Support Specialists who can become invaluable members of a management team. Successful students may choose to progress to advanced qualifications such as Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), which are in high demand.
