When going off to travel, it can be a huge pain about what to pack and how

. Whether it be that you are choosing to volunteer in Guatemala or trek across the Sahara, nothing is more vital than making sure that you have all the essentials packed.

Before you pack anything, it is always wise to compile a list of items you will need. Having done tonnes of research on your chosen countries beforehand, you should have a vague idea of essentials that you may need, depending on the time of year and place that you will be going to. So within your list, make a separate section for other accessories such as lotions, sprays and first aid. In terms of clothing, it is always wise to imagine starting right at the top of your head, ie a hat, and moving all the way down your body to ensure that you have no missed anything you may need clothing-wise. Always remember to have a separate section for documentation as that is something that people often tend to forget last minute.

Once your list has been compiled and you have made sure that you have brought everything you need, the next decision will have to be what type of luggage you are going to use. Many will go straight to the backpack, but you will have to always consider that this is something you may be having on your back for hours at a time. Suitcases are ideal but not always so smooth to run. If you are travelling across major cities, suitcases are probably your best bet as you can just wheel them around but if you will be up in mountains or deserts, a backpack may be your only choice. Always ensure that your delicates are packed at the top whilst the much heavier items are at the bottom.

Tick off your list everything you have placed in your luggage and this will be a way to ensure nothing is missed off. Always leave a week before to pack so that if anything comes to mind, you will have plenty of time before you depart. So if you are choosing to volunteer in Costa Rica, have a great time, but just remember not to pack your head with you as you go. Off and away!
