Paddington Bear - Can You See Him On Peru Vacations

?

Paddington Bear is the hero of a series of popular children's books and, apparently, comes from 'Darkest Peru'. He wears a blue duffel coat and a large black hat under which he hides his marmalade sandwiches, much to the amusement of generations of British children. For many British people, this is their entire knowledge of Peru: it's where Paddington comes from, and there is a place in the jungle called Lima where Paddington's Aunt Lucy lives. You wouldn't be alone if you thought Peru was full of bears in blue duffel coats. But does Paddington really exist?Paddington lives!

If you want to meet Paddington (or at least one of his relatives) on a Peru vacation, then you need to look for the Spectacled Bear, sometimes called the Andean Bear. Chaparri Reserve and Bear Rescue Center is the best place to spot the bears in their natural habitat. However, don't expect Andean Bears to be cuddly - anyone getting too close to one in the wild will probably end up as marmalade...Where to find Paddington

Chaparri is accessed from the city of Chiclayo on the north coast of Peru. The area is also famous for the rich remains found in tombs from the ancient Moche culture.Chaparri Nature Reserve is not easy to get to without the assistance of a tour operator. However as soon as you arrive you'll be in a tranquil setting: there's nothing and nobody. You will feel instantly comfortable and relaxed as there's not much to do apart from look at the wildlife. There are a mixture of rescued and local wild bears; and an excellent chance of spotting a bear in its natural habitat. The history of Chaparri

Chaparri used to be a place where people went to hunt bears and deer, and is now the only place in Peru where bears still live in dry forest - there are other bears living in cloud forest but the dense vegetation makes it difficult to spot them. Heinz Plenge used to be a hunter in the area but in a radical career change he founded the reserve to protect bears instead. In the park restaurant, you can flick through old photos of him as a hunter with his kill.Chaparri has had immense successes in increasing the number of wild bears in the area. As well as protecting wild bears, the reserve also has a programme of rehabilitation for bears previously held in captivity.Where possible, bears previously kept as pets or treated horribly in circuses are gradually reintroduced into the wild. Your questions about Andean Bears answered...

1) What's with the glasses?

No, they don't wear specs but they have whitish or yellow rings around their eyes that make them look like they are wearing glasses. These markings are unique, like a fingerprint.2) Like Paddington, do they like marmalade?

Well yes, fruit is the main part of their diet. Plus a tiny bit of honey - so that bit is true. They are also partial to fish.3) Where else can I see the Spectacled Bear?

There is a chance to see the bear on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, or in the small sanctuary in the grounds of the Pueblo Hotel near the site. In Ecuador communities are working to preserve the cloud forest habitat of the bears in the north of the country.Have you visited Chaparri? Are there any other great nature reserves in Peru that you would recommend?
