Painting Skirting Boards

decorating skirting boards can be quite a tricky job for anyone

, especially if you've never done it before You need to use the right kind of paint, get your skirting boards ready, as well as making sure you don't get paint on the flooring and already painted walls.

The first decision your going to need to make is what type , and color of paint your going to use on the skirting boards. You will need a layer of primer, then a base coat, and then a top coat, so keep this in mind. You can use either a gloss, satin or matt paint, and this is mostly down to personal preference than actual guidelines. Personally I would go for a gloss paint for my skirting boards. As for color, its usually best to go for plain white, but if you would like to use a color that will tie your flooring, and walls together, than feel free.

You will need to make some preparations firstly, by making sure both the edge where the skirting board meets the wall, and where it meets the carpet, are protected as much as possible. I advise a double layer of masking tape for the wall edge, and a piece of card for the carpet. Then you will to make sure the surface you are painting is properly prepared as well. You need to make sure the surface is free from dirt and dust, as well as being even to paint, although this can normally be leveled out with a layer of primer.

Next comes applying the primer. For this use a medium size brush, and apply a thin layer. Don't over do this at this can ruin the surface of the wood. it is normally best to brush back and forth horizontally, as the means you can be a lot more careful with the edges, as well as giving an even coverage. Leaveallow this to dry for a good four hours, and then come back to paint it.

copy this technique for painting, using two thin coats rather than one thick coat, as this will give a more even coverage. Again stick with horizontal strokes, and be extremely careful with the edges. If after two thin coats, you feel the skirting board required another one because it has not covered properly, then give in another thin coat.

Throughout this whole process you will need to carry on checking that the primer and the paint have not seemed through the cardboard you are using to protect the carpet. If it is possible, pull back your carpet from the walls, as this will guarantee that they wont get ruined.

Painting skirting boards is a job that willwhich will most probably take you the whole day, once you take drying times in to account, but should only take a few hours of your time to actually the painting, though this does depend on the size of the room!

I hope I have managed to help you, and will have you on the way to the perfect skirting boards.
