Painting Your Home Can Have A Big Value Impact

Painting may be the easiest and most effective step in home improvement

. It can be done by just about anyone, can drastically change the look of your home, and can be a great deal of fun. Changing the color scheme in your house will also change the mood. It is a good step to undertake if you are looking to sell your house, update the style, or just feel in need of a change. Painting, especially on the outside, can also add a great deal of longevity to your house's life.

Painting can help reduce wear on the building, especially on the outside. On the inside, it mostly just serves the purpose of looking nice. External paint, however, will provide one more layer between the elements of nature and the wood of your house. Though it is a thin barrier, it is a necessary one. This is why you should repaint the outside of a house at least every five years. Most people prefer every other year, just to be safe.

The exterior walls are not the only place to focus. Windows and doors are also vastly important. You should even paint the insides of windows and doors, since they have a far more direct contact with different weather conditions than the insides of walls. If you do not keep a close eye on these parts of your house and apply paint correctly and often, the wood could start to rot.

Make sure to tape around all edges before you start to paint. Use masking tape, as it peels off easily. Do not forget door knobs, light switches, electrical outlets, crown molding or wainscoting, and window sills. If you are painting windows, tape carefully around every single pane of glass. Accidentally getting paint on the glass is extremely irritating, as it can only be scraped off with a razor. Use a smaller paint brush to reduce mistakes.

The standard way to paint large areas is to make sure your brush always goes in the same direction. If you are painting a wall, do not start painting side-to-side and then change to an up-and-down motion. You will be able to see the brush strokes. This is why roller painting is a better option for many. Because of the sponge-like material and the even distribution of paint, you will not be able to see any brush marks. You will have to use a brush as you get into corners and other tight areas, though.

Ornate architecture requires more time on your part. Do not rush this. Use a small brush and do at least two careful coats to make sure you got into all nooks and crannies. It you use a big brush and use too much paint, it will build up in small areas, filling it and making it look bad. Take your time, because if too much paint dries in these areas, you will have a difficult time clearing it out.

Look at your furniture in order to pick the best color to paint your walls. Accent colors in furniture and curtains could give you an idea of what to buy for wall color. By picking a pin-stripe color on your sofa and then painting the walls that color, you could match things well and make the room stand out. If you have molding or wainscoting, do not be afraid to try more daring colors there. These areas do not require much paint and can give you a chance to experiment. You can just paint it over if you dislike the color.

When you go to buy your paint, look at all the possible options. Do you want a paint that has a slight reflective sheen? Would you prefer that it look dull? Do you want to do stencils or murals on your wall? Remember that you have the options to sponge-paint or to do an antique crackle to give the room character.
