There are four different types of pallet scales typically used in the process of weighing pallets. They are pallet beams, pallet jack scales, surface mounted floor scales, and pit mounted scales. Each type of weighing system has its own benefits and short comings. Below, I'll go over each type of scale and what application it is best suited for.

The most commonly used method of weighing pallets is with pallet beams. A pallet beam is comprised of two individual weighing beams that are spaced apart according to the size of the ballet that is being weighing. Pallet beams are best used for weighing odd sized items such as flight cases and large export packages due to their varying widths. Pallet beams are flexible and easy to use. They're also portable and can easily be stored away by one operator. These pallet scales are normally loaded and unloaded using a pallet jack or fork lift.

The next of the four types of pallet scales on our list is the pallet jack scale. In the UK, the pallet jack scale is known as the pallet truck scale. This scale is very portable and has the ability to interface with printers and other connective devices. This makes using them incredibly easy and effective for warehouses. Basically, a pallet jack scale is a forklift with a scale built into it. You would think this would make the pallet jack scale the most popular choice for weighing in warehouses, but there are unfortunately some common problems associated with them. Because of their frequent use as standard forklifts, pallet jack scales tend to wear out faster than other types of pallet scales. If you decide to purchase one of these, it's best to keep it separated from your standard pallet jacks in order to preserve its longevity.

The third of our pallet scales is the surface mounted floor scale. As you would imagine, for the most part, these scales are loaded and unloaded with a forklift truck. You really should not load and unload one any other way, though some people use ramps to pull pallets onto the scale. Surface mounted floor scales are not portable, which is their biggest downfall. They are, however, very flexible in the weighing of all types of freight.

The last scale on our list of pallet scales is the pit mounted scale. This type of scale is actually mounted into the ground of the factory or warehouse. Needless to say, this type of scale is not portable. However, this type of scale does offer the advantage of being a space saver for factories that are small, and they are perfect for factories that have a higher volume of weighing. It is recommended that you load and unload the pit mounted scale with a pallet truck. You can use the tare function of the pit mounted scale to subtract the gross weight of the pallet truck from the pallet that is being weighed. If your pit mounted scale is built to a heavy duty standard then you can also weigh pallets with a forklift truck. However, if the pit mounted scale is standard built, you'll want to avoid this, as sometimes the scale can flex and load cells may fail.
