Panic Alarms For The Elderly In Ireland

A panic alarm gives peace of mind as well as being a practical solution for both the person at risk and their carers

. Knowing that help is only the press of a button away is comforting for all concerned, and thankfully there are a large variety of panic alarms available today.

The elderly, those at risk of falling, people with physical disabilities, dementia patients and people with chronic illness are all users of a panic button or alarm pendant in Ireland. Carers are notified and can respond quickly to the alarm being raised.

When assessing the needs for a panic alarm / pendant alarm it is essential to understand the different benefits of each system available. The following is a quick overview of the 2 main types of panic alarms and alarm pendants for the elderly:

Paging Devices - typically these types of units are used where the carer is very local. When activated the carer is notified via their pager and the equipment operates within a limited range - up to 150 meters depending on model. The alarm is activated by pressing a call button on a pendant alarm, and must be reset by the carer.

Panic buttons can also be in the form of larger "Jelly Buttons" to aid those with cognitive problems, dementia or learning difficulties. Waterproof panic buttons are also available.

Carephone 2-Way Speech Pendant - Carephone is an advanced help call alarm system. A pendant is used to activate the alarm which notified dials pre-determined carers via a normal landline. The pendant allows two-way conversation and is also able to be used to answer incoming calls.

The system is intelligent and when raising an alarm is able to distinguish if the call has been answered by a "real person" and not an answer machine. If the latter, it will dial the next pre-set contact.

This system has many advanced features and is easy to set-up and maintain by the carer.

Careful consideration needs to be given when selecting the correct panic alarm or help call pendant.
