Paradores of Spain - get out and explore

Every wondered what it would be like to stay in a castle or a palace? It's the stuff of fantasy and day dreams. Unless you're planning a trip to Spain.

Spain has always been popular with tourists, but how many people can say they ventured away from the main resorts and explored new and exciting regions? The thing about being adventurous is that you can leave the dull resort hotels behind and stay in a paradores in Spain instead.

Back in the 1920s the Spanish government started a scheme to attract visitors to new regions of the country untouched by tourism and to preserve ancient buildings and monuments at the same time. Paradors are essentially converted historical buildings, like palaces and monasteries for example, adapted for use by tourists. Giving them an affordable place to stay in some of Spain's most picturesque towns, villages and coastal gems. Visitors can enjoy modern comforts, but at the same time soak up the history and tradition of Spain.

Many paradors can be found in the Castilla y Leon region of the country. Imagine being transported back to the 16th century, but with all mod cons. This region alone contains over 2000 castles. They haven't all been converted into paradores in this part of Spain though! You can only stay in some of them. Some of the most popular include Castillo de Valencia de Don Juan and the Castillo de Cuellar.

As well as castles you'll find plenty of pretty villages. Most are based around an open square and contain plenty of fascinating historical monuments. Perhaps the most famous attraction in the whole region is the restored castle of Alcazar.

An imposing fortress that leaves you in no doubt of its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Forget the resorts and get out and explore everything that Spain has to offer. After all who wouldn't want to stay in palace.
