Parrot Care Tips

Owning a parrot as a pet can be very rewarding. Everyday care seems like a very big responsibility. It will require your time, attention and a lot of hard work. But once you maintain a good relationship with it, you will surely be happy for the parrot brightens and livens any home. Here are basic tips on taking care of your parrot.

First, find a cage that fits them perfectly and still has extra space for them to move around. If you can afford it, a bigger cage is always the best choice. They need to spread their wings freely and have a place where they have the freedom to roam around. Doors must be locked from outside and not on inside. Parrots are smart birds and they may get out if the cage is not properly locked. Paper, sand, or saw dust can serve as a lining on the bottom of the cage. Sand can contribute to sharpening their beaks and there are essential minerals in it which parrots can gain from. Toys can also be placed like a swinging perch. The lining must be changed daily while the cage must be cleaned every three months to ensure the cleanliness.

Food is another big factor in a parrot's health. They must be given a well balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables meats and grains. They want to be fed in smaller servings throughout rather than one big serving a day.Parrot pellets are actually an easier alternative to feed them because it already contains all the neccessary nutrients and minerals they need. Remember not to give chocolate, avocado, lima beans, kidney beans, coffee, any heavily salted foods and alcohol as these can harm them. Wash their food and water bowls daily.

All parrots need grooming too. Their body must be cleaned with just water and dry them gently using towel. Bathing them must be done at least once a week. Lukewarm is best and shampoos for parrots are now commercially available. Always check their wings and nails. Clipping their nails must be done first by a vet so you would know the proper way to do it since doing it in a wrong way would definitely hit the parrot.

Just like us human, parrots also have their needs for them to grow. We have taken them from their natural habitat so it's just our responsibility to take care of them too. Truly they can be a source of fun among families but when they are not well taken care of they will surely lose their cheerful and vibrant side.
