Partworks Continue To Work For Publishers
The past few years have seen difficult times in the magazine sector
, with traditional titles declining in sales and whole sectors struggling to increase sales and subscriptions. This gloomy outlook has hardly affected the partworks sector.
Indeed, whilst the internet has been bad news for many printed publications, ease of subscription has actually grown consumer confidence in partworks there is no longer the danger that the newsagent will loose interest before the consumer and stop stocking the partwork after no 66!
By some accounts, partworks are the fourth bestselling magazine sector in the UK.
Partworks could traditionally describe any publication that builds up week-by-week. If Charles Dickens returned to earth no doubt with a contract to write for Eastenders he would understand the term. But more recently the modern concept of the part work has included a physical item along with the magazine that in turn builds week by week models are the classic example.
Partworks often launch nationally through TV campaigns. The traditional launch has occurred around Dec to Jan the New Year bringing new interests for the consumer, and some cash to spend on their latest hobbies etc.
Unsurprisingly, partworks have been popular with and therefore often aimed at children and in the past have covered a wide range of topics, particularly with an educational topic. Recent childrens partworks have included history, anatomy and astronomy and encyclopaedia type partwork continue to sell well despite Wikipedia.
Adult-focussed partworks often concentrate on hobbies (making and doing), collections or entertainment, although there have been a number of educational titles too.
The UK partworks market has been dominated by three big publishers for a number of years, but divergent routes to market, internet subscriptions and advances in production have opened the market to new producers. Imaginative subjects and marketing will play an increasing part in the future of such publications.
Perhaps unusually, given that most ideas today come from USA, partworks are relatively rare on the other side of the Atlantic perhaps because of the size of the distribution involved. Partworks are established in many English-speaking parts of the world, and France and Spain have buoyant markets often featuring the same titles as the UK.
Despite major changes in the print sector and continued economic difficulties across the globe, partworks continue to remain popular with readers and publishers alike.
