Festival, party, celebration, however you describe it the Spanish fiestas are a fantastic

reason to visit Spain! The fiestas are extremely important to local residents, symbolising moments in a Spanish town's history and celebrating the local culture. With fiestas happening all through the year, holiday makers are bound to take part in at least one of them during their holidays. From battle re-enactments to spectacular firework displays, no one fiesta is ever the same. This is a guide to some of the more exciting and important festivals happening in the Costa Blanca resort throughout the year.

Holy Week: The Easter week is the most important Catholic tradition of the year, beginning on Palm Sunday and ending Easter Monday. Costa Blanca celebrates Holy week with an exciting carnival where religious icons are displayed in the street to re-create the passion of Christ.

Moors & Christians: This fiesta celebrates the re-introduction of a Christian rule in Spain. Locals dress as either a Moor or a Christian and re-enact the battles that took place, the costumes and fireworks are amazing and a real treat for tourists wanting to gain a better understanding of this aspect of Spanish culture. This fiesta takes place 16th-19th Match.

San Vincente Ferrer: This is another important fiesta in the Costa Blanca calendar especially for the town of Teulade which honours their patron saint Vincent Ferrer. The celebrations last for ten days and include life music, dance shows and spectacular religious re-enactments, ending on 15th April.


Fire Festival: This is another major festival with some exciting displays of pyrotechnics! The fiesta takes place for five days every March and see's paper mache representations of local figures being stuffed with fireworks and set alight. Those that enjoy excitement will definitely approve of the lively firework competitions which take place during the fiesta.


May Fiesta: This celebration was originally started as a street party outside of a bar in Torrevieja. The event has grown in popularity as is now a major celebration of all aspects of Spanish culture set within a fair ground. Expect to see flamenco dancing, traditional dress and fantastic equestrian displays. Famous Spanish musicians have been known to perform at the event.

Patron Saint' Days: Every town and village in Costa Blanca has a feast to honour its own patron saint. The celebrations last a week and many shops close down during the period. Beauty contests are held and giant paellas are cooked in the streets!
