Patent Careers: 4 Ways On How To Land Your First Job

If you are looking for a job as a patent attorney or agent

, getting that first job will be the most difficult. One of the main things going against you will be that you do not have any experience, and companies that hire freshers are far and few between. This is actually a bit of a catch-22 situation: if you are not hired, how do you gain experience? This is something that everyone who is starting out comes up against but if you are patient, you will get your first job. Here is what to do when searching for your first job:

*Be proactive and send out your resume and cover letter to as many companies as you can. Companies that are not hiring tend to keep resumes that catch their attention on file, so there is a possibility that they may come back to you when they do have opportunities.

*Even if a company has specified the number of years of experience needed for the job opportunity, send in your resume anyway. Your qualifications may just be enough for them to call you in for an interview. Besides, they may be other positions opening up later that your profile would fit.

*When writing your resume, highlight your strengths. If you haven't any experience in patent application writing, there is no need to bring it to their notice, either in your resume or at an interview. If it does come up, be confident that you will be able to learn quickly. If you have passed the patent bar examination, then you will have an idea of how applications are written so that should stand you in good stead.

*Understand that you will receive many a rejection letter or phone call. You should not take these personally. Of course you would be disappointed but that shouldn't stop you from applying for every job you can because eventually you will get one. Once you do, you will gain all the experience you need to move on to bigger and better positions.

Most companies you send your resume to will feel that you do not suit their requirements. But there will be some who will hire you despite your lack of experience. This is because you can be trained to do things their way, and you cost less than an experienced patent attorney or agent. At the end of the day, if you are determined and patient enough, your persistence will pay off and it won't be long before you land your first job.
