The television program that I have in mind is the Pawn Stars television program on the History Channel. The show features new episodes Monday nights at 10pm E.T., but often airs previous shows in earlier time slots throughout the week. Another option I recently found out about is that the shows are also available to view using the cable on demand feature.

Background and Cast

The premise of this reality television show is a family owned pawn shop in Las Vegas. The actual store is the Gold & Silver Pawn Store. The Harrison family runs the business and happens to be part of the shows appeal. There is Richard "Old Man" Harrison, his son Rick "The Spotter" Harrison, and Rick's son Corey "Big Hoss". Corey's friend Austin "Chumlee" Russell is also part of the regular cast.

Show Happenings

On the show we see people who bring their items into the store to sell for cash. The item is inspected by one of the family members to authenticate it and determine it's value. This is the time during the show that we learn so much about art, music, history and more. The items that come into the shop are varied, and so the we are able to learn about topics ranging from sports memorabilia to coins. Often times we see Rick "The Spotter" doing this and when he isn't certain of an items value, he will call in one of his experts. We get to see at this point of the show Rick's first thoughts about the item and then what his thoughts are if the item is authenticated by the expert.

The Negotiations Begin

Once the item is authenticated the negotiations begin. This is intriguing and also another learning opportunity offered by the show. Seeing the owner of the piece negotiate an acceptable price is entertaining and intriguing. Sometimes a deal doesn't happen, and that's what is always in the back of your mind...will this one be a successful deal for the owner and the pawn shop.

Once a selling price has been agreed upon, the deal is sealed with a shake and often time "Chumlee" writing up the order.
