Pei A Little Island Community With Color And Character
PEI has a population of only 140,000 people on a good day and many of these are the descendants of the original settlers
. Islanders, as the residents of PEI like to call themselves, are mainly of Scots, English and Irish descent, with approximately 14% French descent. There are areas such as St Evangeline that are strongly French and there are French schools operated by a French School Board on the island. However PEI has one of the most homogenous populations of any province in Canada. Generally you can tell which part of the island anyone is from by their surname and you will find the phone book full of Gallants, Noonans and Arsenaults. This leads to references like, oh, youre the Rustico Gallants. Of course anyone who is not from PEI is referred to as being from away.
The people of PEI refer to it as the Island. In fact the Mikmaq name for PEI, Minegoo means the Island. Really islanders think of PEI as being the only island and while young islanders will often leave the island to work or make their way in the world they almost always return. PEI has a great pull on its inhabitants. Of course once you have been here you will see why. Little crime, wonderful picturesque rolling fields and quaint fishing harbors as well as a people who are welcoming and a community that cares for its own. Walk down any street and look in the shops and you will see posters for this or that event being held to help someone with the expenses of travel to medical treatment, or to help with any other hardship that may have befallen a member of the community.
When visiting PEI you will find that the summers are as warm as the people but are rarely humid as you find in other parts of Canada. There is usually a cooling breeze. Waters are warm in the summer and it is pleasant to swim at the ocean beaches. Winter can begin any time after Halloween and we certainly, as does most of Canada, have our share of winter. Islanders use the word stormstayed to refer to being kept in by a snowstorm, however not all snow comes in the form of storms and we get lovely lolly, gentle fluffy snow, as well
PEI has through its history been an agrarian province however, although the island is still striped by rows of plantings, a lot of the island land has been used for housing and much has been bought by people from away. PEI though can still be called the million acre farm. PEI actually has a fairly high population density of approximately 24 persons per square kilometer. However this does not produce overcrowding, because PEI is still rural the population is spread evenly over the island. There is very little Crown land however, most being privately owned.
Some believe that non-islanders can not buy land on PEI. This misconception is caused by IRAC, the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission, which does have to approve large purchases of land by non-residents, but you can easily purchase the amount of property that most people want. The PEI real estate market is strong and a good investment as the homes and properties represent good solid value and continue to appreciate.
