Finding Anne of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island
The best way to find Anne of Green Gables is to drive to Cavendish, which will take you through the pastorals and farmlands made famous by LM Montgomery in her book. Plan for a few days of sightseeing and side trips that will take you first to Prince Edward Island National Park. The fabled Green Gables is located here, preserved for all time, the setting of the storied red haired Anne. Plan to stay a few days in one of the many famed PEI cottages and hotels to make your trip complete.
You should allow for plenty of time to explore the house, the haunted woods, and lover's lane. In addition, there are interpretive programs and films, along with several gift shops and a snack counter, providing for a quick bite to eat, should you want it. Cavendish is also home to the residence where Montgomery's relatives, the MacNeill's lived and in fact, still reside. The MacNeill's themselves offer guided tours of their grounds as well as the opportunity to buy the book at at the bookstore.
Your second stop on the Green Gables tour should be Avonlea Village, which is a rural community frozen in the time that Anne lived. You will find music, wagon rides, a candy shop and animators who will bring village life to alive for you, the tourist. If you're vigilant, you may also see Anne and Diana darting in and around the buildings, stopping occasionally to perform vignettes. This is especially the case when the LM Montgomery festival takes place in early July.
Your next stop might be New London and the beautiful little house that was the author's birthplace. There you will see Montgomery's wedding dress and all of her personal scrapbooks. The Anne of Green Gables Museum is located at Silver Bush in the Park Corner area. There are many artifacts located here from the times that Montgomery spent living here with relatives. Please, make time for tea and shopping when visiting the land at Shining Waters Craft Shop and Tea Room. If you're looking for a place to get married, then this shop is the perfect place for booking a wedding, which take place in the parlor where Montgomery, herself was married.
Silver Bush offers carriage rides around the property and down by the lake toward the beach. The Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Museum is also located in Park Corner and no Green Gables tour is complete without a stop at the Museum. The Museum features the original furnishings, autographed first editions of the book and much, much more, giving a glimpse into times past. Stop by Gateway Village in Borden-Carleton, dress up as Anne and get your picture taken, complete with red braids. Check out the Lower Bedeque Schoolhouse where Montgomery was employed as a school teacher.
In the Bideford Community, the parsonage has been restored and is now exists as a museum, featuring old world writings, books and other written material. The site freezes in time the goings on of the late 1800's when Montgomery lived. The best way to finish your tour is to end up in Charlottetown, home of the founding of the Canadian Federation in 1864. In Charlottetown you can see Anne of Green Gables, the musical bringing your tour full circle. As well along the way don't forget to stop at one of the many other PEI tourist and travel destinations such as Cavendish Beach, lobster suppers, or even a friendly round of golf on one of the world famous PEI Golf Courses.
