. The refreshing air of the moist deciduous forest , which looks like a colorful canvas of different shades will surely mesmerize you at the very first glimpse.
Location:Enfolds in the mountain ranges of Western Ghats, Periyar is the pride of Kerala.
This
wildlife sanctuary of Kerala is in Thekkady which is just 4Km from the Kummily. It was created due to the construction of dam on the Periyar river in 1895. Periyar lake serves as main source of water for the local fearsome animals.

Sprawled across an area of 777 sq km, Periyar is a rich bio-diversity zone of India. It is one of the oldest protected areas for animals and was declared a sanctuary in 1934. In the year 1978, it became the 27th Tiger project of India.
Attractions of Periyar:
Periyar is home to numerous wild animals like Elephants, Gaur, Sambhar, Wild boars, Wild pig, Barking deer, Mouse deer, Dole or Indian will Dog, Tigers and for reptiles such as Monitor lizards, Python, King Cobra.
Periayr is also a favorite feeding ground for birds like Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket- tailed Drongoes. It also provides shelter to four species of primates - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. It also happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which is an endangered species.

Every year thousands of wild life lovers throng here to witness the natural fauna and flora at its best. An evening walk or a jeep or an elephant safari into the jungle path is the best option to spot the wild animals in their natural habitat. A boat cruising at the Periyar lake is a nice option to spot the animals at the time of their ablution and playfulness.

Kummily- Situated just 4kms from Periyar is another fast growing tourist town. People of this town are mostly involved in spice trading. It has some excellent hotels and resorts for the accommodation. It is is well served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
Another nearby attraction of this sanctuary is the Cardomom hills.
