Persuasion And Influence-4 Secrets To Spice Up Any Conversation
Persuasion And Influence-4 Secrets To Spice Up Any Conversation
Have you ever wondered why some people just have this uncanny ability to make friends easily and be popular?
Well, one reason could be that these people have excellent conversational skills and are thus able to connect with other people easily, making others like them.
You probably already know the benefits of being a good conversationalist. So, how do you master the art of conversation? Here are a few tips.
Tip 1: Read Their Body Language
What is the language that is used by almost everyone in the world but is often misunderstood? If you guessed body language, you're right! To be a good conversationalist, you must first know how to read body language. For example, if you're talking to Frank, read his body language. If Frank is folding his arms, leaning away from you or even avoiding eye contact with you, it is likely that Frank is not interested in what you are currently saying. Perhaps you should change the topic of the conversation. Alternatively, when you're listening to Frank talk, you could use your body language to show him that you're interested. For example, you could lean forward, maintain eye contact and make some small affirmations like "Yup that's true" or even make gestures like nodding your head in agreement when the conversation is in progress to show Frank that you're interested in what he has to say. Studies have shown that maintaining constant eye contact with another person actually makes the other person develop positive feelings towards you.
Tip 2: Ask Questions and Let Them Talk
Try to ask people questions that they can elaborate on. For example, you could ask something like "why do you like this shirt?" Refrain from asking questions that may lead to only one word answers. For example, do not ask questions like "Do you like this shirt?" which have only a yes or no answer. Such questions are conversation killers and can lead to awkward moments. Start your questions with words like "why" or "how" that give people room to elaborate on. People like to talk about themselves and if you give them the chance by asking and listening to them, they'll like you even more. If you cannot think of questions to ask, a good way to start would be to ask them about their interests and have them elaborate on them. By doing so, you not only know more about this person, you will also leave a positive impression on this person.
Tip 3: Give Compliments
We all love to hear people say nice things about us and that's why being able to give compliments is also another vital aspect of being a good conversationalist. Giving compliments is a good thing but do not overdo it to the point that it looks exaggerated. If you cannot find anything to compliment someone about, start by looking at the person's dressing. You normally can find something to compliment the person about from his or her dressing. You could also back up your compliments with a reason. For example, you could compliment someone like this: "I like your shirt because of all those nice buttons". Backing up your compliments with reasons will make your compliment sound more sincere and heartfelt.
Tip 4: Establish similarities
People like others who are similar to them. This similarity can be in dressing, tone, beliefs, background, interests and so on. When you are conversing with Adeline for example, try to learn as much about her as possible and from there, try to establish a similarity. You could do this by asking questions in which she can elaborate on as mentioned above. For example, if you find out that Adeline likes to watch the TV Series Prison Break. You could say something like "Hey I like Prison Break too! What do you think of the ending?" By establishing a similarity between you and Adeline, familiarity is fostered between the two of you and she will like you even more.
Try the above techniques out and you'll have more fruitful and enriching conversations while making more friends and being well liked and popular. I hope these techniques will be of use to you. Have fun trying them out!
