Pest control in London is at its busiest in summer
, the much-welcomed time of the year. Although the summer months in the UK dont guarantee great weather, its still a time for walking, hiking, swimming, camping and barbeques in between avoiding rainy days. Its also a time when people travel abroad, and you can always be sure that whatever the weather, insects in the UK are not as troublesome here as they are overseas.
So what are the most common summer insects that cause concern and should you be worried about these insects?
Bees and Wasps
Bees pollinate flowers and are an essential link in the food chain. They give us crops and eat harmful pests such as flies and grubs. However, bees and wasps especially can give out very painful stings, and cause much anxiety when they are present. Wasps are much more aggressive than bees when a wasp stings, they omit a pheromone to other wasps, so you can find that rather than just one or two, you will see many together. In addition, people can have allergic reactions to the stings and until you are stung, you wont know if this is the case.
Bees rarely sting unless provoked, so the best thing to do is not panic, stay calm and still and if you find that one lands on you or your child blow it away rather than hit it. If it sees your hand coming towards it, it will cause it to panic and sting you as a defence. Wasps may sting if you are too close to their nest so if you do see a nest, stay away and call a professional to remove it.
Stings are painful but most people only have a local reaction. Its estimated that 3% of people have a more serious reaction with a rash and possibly hives appearing. There are extreme cases of anaphylaxis shock with life threatening symptoms. If this happens, its essential that you call emergency services straight away.
If you are stung, try and remove the sting if you can see it its usually sticking out of your skin. Clean the area and put ice on the sting. If the pain doesnt subside, take a painkiller.
Mosquitoes
Mosquito bits are common and whilst they are annoying and itchy, they are not life threatening in the UK or Europe.
Mosquitos bite around dusk and dawn, so its important to use a repellent- try and get something gentle for children i.e. that doesnt contain DEET.Its also advisable to cover up arms and legs at this time of day. If you do have stings, dont scratch if you can help it! Its hard but scratching the sting will just make it worse. You can apply Benadryl and over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream
Unfortunately, mosquitoes in Asia and Africa can transmit infections like malaria, dengue, or West Nile Virus (WNV). If you are travelling to an area where Malaria or other serious illnesses are prevalent, you may want to discuss the options with your doctor so that you can protect yourself whilst away.
Ticks
Ticks can transmit Lyme Disease and can be difficult to remove. The best way to avoid ticks is to avoid long grass and rolling around in fields (which is why children commonly pick them up!), wear long socks or trousers and covered shoes when walking and you must check your skin after you have been in areas with long grass. The best protection against ticks consists ofpermethrin-treated clothing combined with DEET applied to skin.
Most ticks need to feed on human blood for a few hours before they can successfully transmit infections so check for ticks regularly if out hiking or walking.
To remove a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure and avoid squashing the tick because spreading tick blood in the bite wound might increase the risk of infection. Once the tick is removed, clean the area with an antiseptic wipe.
The key is to use repellant, and to check your body for any signs of bites or ticks. If you are travelling abroad, seek advice on which insects could be a danger to you in that country.
