Pharmacy Technician- A Quick Training Guide

Do you want to join the medical field but you do not want to spend years in training school or be a nurse

? If so, becoming a pharmacy technician will let you join the medical field without years of school. (Although it takes time to become a pharmacist, is does not take as long as becoming a doctor does.) As a pharmacist you will use your knowledge of medications to fill prescriptions and advice patients on how their medication need to be taken, what side effects they may or may not suffer from their medication, and how different medications interact with each other. You will also have the opportunity to work closely with doctors, and preparing drug therapist in areas such as oncology and intravenous nutrition support. Now that you know what some of your duties will be as a pharmacist, let's take a look at how you become a pharmacy technician.

Pharmacy Technician Training/Education

In order to become a pharmacist you need to graduate with a PharmD Degree (Doctor of Pharmacy Degree) after attending a pharmacist school approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education. You will also be required to complete an internship under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist and to obtain your pharmaceutical license you will need to pass the state examination (NAPLEX).

- In order to apply to a pharmacy school you will need to do the fallowing things, complete a pre-pharmacy course and take a PCAT test (Pharmacy College Admission Test). Once you have taken the PCAT you need to gather additional papers/information such as essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, test scores and some pharmacy schools require you to attend an interview with them before starting the course.

- A majority of pharmacy schools require you to do a minimum of two year of pre-pharmacy college in order to enroll in a PharmD program.

- When you become a pharmacy technician you have two degree options to choose from, they are a PharmD on Doctor Pharmacy or a Non-Traditional PharmD.

Now that you have taken a quick view at the training a pharmacy technician needs to go through, let's take a look at some other important things you need to become a pharmacist. In general, most pharmacist work an average of forty hours per week and they often work evening and weekends. They earn a salary of $106,764; however most pharmacists earn more than $112,000 per year. You must also keep in mind that it is illegal in all fifty states to practice pharmacy without a license; hence, you must attend a PharmD program and pass NAPLEX (North America Pharmacist Licensure Examination).
