World No 2 Phil Mickelson has been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis but says he feels much more fit ahead of this week's US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. The American left-hander went through intense pain in his joints shortly before the US Open at Pebble Beach in June, causing him to walk with difficult.
Since consulting with specialists, however, he quickly began recovering after starting treatment and taking medication.
"Things have been nearly all right and long term there shouldn't be any issues," Mickelson told reporters on Tuesday while making preparation for the year's final major.
"I've got the best kind that you can possibly have, and it's very treatable. I'll probably take this drug for about a year. It's put it in remission. I feel 90 percent."
Mickelson, a four-time major winner who achieved the 2005 PGA Championship, first became conscious of the symptoms while on holiday with his family in Hawaii eight weeks ago.
"I woke up and I felt intense pain in joints and tendons and the like - so much so that I couldn't walk," the 40-year-old said.
"It gradually got worse, and finally I figured out that something was wrong and had to get it checked."
After battling into a tie for 48th at last month's British Open, Mickelson went back to the United States and saw a specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, before starting treatment.
"I was concerned about being able to swing a club," he said, "... and I'm surprised that how quickly it's gone away, how quickly it's been able to be controlled and managed.
"I didn't perform well at the British. But I'm able to work on it. I firmly believe the game's coming around."
Renowned for his special taste for hamburgers, Mickelson sprang another surprise on Tuesday when he claimed he had become a vegetarian seven weeks ago.
"Can you believe that?" he smiled. "No, this wasn't recommended by a doctor, I read a book and just thought maybe it will help. And if it helps my situation, I'm all for it."
"It's more like a process," said the American, who needs to finish no worse than joint fourth at Whistling Straits to have the luck to take over at the top for the first time.
For a ninth successive tournament, Mickelson has an opportunity to replace Tiger Woods as world number one.
"I've had several bad performances the last couple months. If I can get my game back to where I know it can be, I should be able to fulfill that dream of being No 1."
