Databases have been around now for a while, though there are still people and even business who will call a table, flat file, excel file, lotus spread sheet and many other files that may hold a lot of data with a single purpose but used in many ways A DATABASE!, it still is a concept that alludes many people, then there are some who think depending on the level, the quality even the popularity of certain products, that this is what qualifies them to be true database application or system.

What constitutes a true database has been controversial, I find the organization of 2 or more tables with single purpose that when combine create many purposes and whose function has a clear understanding of the part it plays in supporting a business, process or marketing goal.

I have been in the Marketing and Direct marketing industry for over 20 years, the function of databases that I have come into contact with have been the main source of prospect mining, many times a large group of flat files from many sources and media's that varying selection criteria can be compiled into a marketing databases then have the data subset-ted out and sold based on it's prospect value and how it was criteria selected.

There ia a concept called multi-buyer flagging that goes way back, this when you have the same person on multiple files but for different reasons.
