Physical therapy is a specialty which focuses on the treatment of different musculoskeletal system which involves evaluation, diagnosing and treating such disorders. This helps an individual to improve his physical movement by way of rehabilitation. A variety of physical therapy has been introduced in the world today. It is widely used nowadays by different individuals, in different forms of treatment. Physical therapy identifies and maximizes quality of life. PT can be practice in different settings such as outpatient's clinics or offices, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, schools and even fitness centers and sports training facilities. Hippocrates and Galenus believed to have been practitioner of physical therapy in 460 B.C.
There are five most common specialty areas widely use in physical therapy namely:
(1) Orthopedic Physical Therapy- this specialty is mostly found in the out-patient clinical setting. The therapists are trained to diagnose, manage and treat disorders and injuries of our musculoskeletal system such as sports injuries, arthritis, and amputations. Quick recovery from orthopedic surgery is also their priority. The often used of joint mobilizations, strength training, hot packs/cold packs and electrical stimulation to speed the recovery of the patients.
(2) Geriatric Physical Therapy- suffers by aging individuals as they go through normal process of life. This therapy provides programs to help restore their mobility; reduce pain suffering and increase fitness to become healthy.
(3) Neurological Physical Therapy- they work on individuals with neurological disorder. Usually, patients with this disorder suffer paralysis, vision impairment, poor balance, difficulty walking and loss of independence. (4) Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation- mostly patients with cardiac and pulmonary problems went through this procedure. Its goal is to increase endurance and functional independence in their activities of daily living.
(5) Pediatric Physical Therapy- infants, children and adolescents with variety of injuries that affects muscles, bones and joints. Improving patient's gross and fine motor skills, balance and coordination, strength and endurance and this also includes cognitive and sensory processing.
Physical therapy has been discovered to be an appropriate treatment for Autism. People with autism have delays, differences or disorders in many areas such as gross and fine motor skills. Day to day functioning is affected with their low muscle tone or have a tough time with coordination, these also interferes with their social and physical development as children. According to study, children with autism have physical limitations that need to be considered, example of these includes difficulty in sitting or walk for a longer period of time.
The process of physical therapy can only be determined on the progress of their rehabilitation. They undergo series of tests to meet the good outcome.
