Picking The Right Infrared Security Cameras

For day or night surveillance, infrared security cameras will be the thing you need to do the job right

. When the infrared security surveillance camera is on during the day, it will show a full color picture. However, it will switch to a black and white mode for nighttime surveillance. The black and white imaging is made possible by many LEDs that have been placed around the lens. Although, this is not the same as thermal cameras, which will use a radiating, heat signature to produce an image. The sensor on the camera is the only thing that will detect the light that is emitted onto objects or in rooms that are dark. A regular security camera cannot give you the same results in viewing low light images as infrared security cameras.

There is a large selection of different types of infrared security cameras out on the market today. You can find both outdoor and indoor infrared security cameras, although an outdoor model will have improved durability so that it can withstand weathering agents. Moreover, you have many options with these cameras when it comes to the lenses shapes, size, and adjustability of the lens.

When shopping for an infrared security camera you want to consider the resolution of the image, size of lens provided and the infrared distance. Obviously the higher the resolution of the camera the better the image quality but that should not be your only consideration. The size of the lens will determine your field of view or viewing angle. While the number and size of the LEDs along with the lens will determine how far you can see in darkness.

Generally for nearby surveillance of 20 feet to 30 feet a 3.6mm to 4.3mm lens is good. This will give you a wide field of view and good detail out to 25 to 30 feet. If you need to see detail at a further distance of 35 to 50 feet you would probably want to go with a 6mm or 8mm lens. Keep in mind that the larger the lens size for any given distance the more detail you will see but your field of view will be smaller.

It is a wise move to invest in infrared security cameras that have a longer range of infrared distance than you actually require. This will be of a great benefit to you since the end of the illuminated area will not be as bright. However, if your infrared distance goes beyond that then the area you wish to be illuminated will be so. For instance, if you need to see up to 80 feet in the dark, you will want an infrared distance that will go 100 feet or more so that the area will be brightened with your cameras view.

Infrared security cameras are a top-notch selection when it comes to surveillance equipment. They work well both day and night, indoors or outdoors, and will provide you with a high quality image. Moreover, they are rather easy to install with fair prices that start at around $100.00. The only work you will have to really do is figure out the infrared distance you will need and the size of the area you wish to cover. One or several infrared security cameras are a good idea to fulfill your need for surveillance.
