. Ciutadella is a city that has about 28,000 inhabitants and it is located on the western part of Menorca. Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. Its neighboring island is Majorca, of which you have probably heard. This city does not lie exactly on the coast; it is about 3 km away from the sea. It does not matter because some of the beaches Algaiarens, Cala del Pilar, Arenal de Son Saura, Cala Blanca La Vall, Cala Morell, Cala Bosch are very beautiful beaches with fine sand. Ciutadella was once the capital of Menorca and today is the seat of Bishop, who refused to move because the first Bishop was situated here in the 4th century!
Most likely, Ciutadella was founded by Carthaginians
Throughout history, this city was conquered either by Arabs or Spaniards. When it was under Arab reign, which lasted for several centuries, Ciutadella was renamed its name was Madina Al Jazira. Spaniards captured the city again during the reign of King Alfonso II and the city was annexed to the kingdom of Aragon.
The city has a rich cultural and historical heritage
There are still-standing walls of the fortresses from the middle ages. Ciutadella is actually located inside these walls. The old town is especially vivid because it has lots of Arab buildings and Arab architecture. The most impressive is the Cathedral of Menorca, which was founded in the 13th century. The cathedral lies on the ruins of a mosque that was located here. Castell Saint Nicolas is a gallery that was used as a tower for defense in the 17th century. The Town Hall once served as the residence of King Alfonso II (he recovered Ciutadella from the Arabs). Ciutadella also has very nice and wide squares like Plaza de Alfonso III and Plaza de la Cathedral. Being the earliest capital of Menorca, the streets take you through the journey of history and provide many insights into the royal background the city once owned!
