Places of interest in Spain – Cuenca
This city of Cuenca which is located in Central Spain is one of the largest provinces covering an area of about 17000 sq kms
. Like other provinces, even Cuenca was under the rule of Romans and Moors and later Christians took over the city. The Moors recognized its strategic location and they started to protect the city by building forts. Cuenca is rich in heritage buildings and is also known for its beautiful environment and natural beauty. We start our tour of Cuenca by visiting Our lady of Grace Cathedral'.This cathedral is believed to have been built during the period 1182 to 1270. The faade of the building was rebuilt in 1902. Historians believe that this is the first Gothic style cathedral in this region. The cathedral has undergone changes that were carried out by successive civilizations. There is a sign of Unum ex septem' in this cathedral. People have the faith that those who pray looking at this sign of Unum ex septem' would get forgiveness from sins for five years.
Church of Saint Peter:
This church is believed to have been built by one Jose Martin in the 18th century. It is located at a place called Plaza del Trabuco. The faade of the church is beautifully designed. The entire church is designed in octagonal shape from the outside while inside it is circular in shape.
Bishop's Palace:
This is our next place of visit. The palace is beautifully designed. The palace has a museum where rare works of art are on display. It is said that some of the art works were lost in the Spanish war of independence. Some of the most beautiful works of handicraft made on carpet are on display in this palace.
Seminary:
Built in the year 1745, it has a rectangular building. The seminary is popular for its baroque faade. This is one of the Seminaries which have collection of numerous religious books dating back to the year 1501. There is a meeting room which is built in typical Gothic architecture. Normally visitors are not allowed inside the meeting room. Every year more than 15 priests are trained in this Seminary. Managana Tower: At the outset, there are no historical records to verify when this tower was built. However, going by the available information, historians believe that the tower was built earlier to the year 1565. Visitors should not miss this Managana Tower because of its architectural beauty. It is also the most ideal viewpoint to have a glimpse of the places around Cuenca.
