Overview

Overview

The city of Mlaga is a municipality in the Andalusia autonomous community in Spain. Its population is about 570,000 and this is the sixth largest city population in Spain. It is located 100 KM from Strait of Gibraltar and 130 KM from North Africa and is on the Sun Coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

History

Mlaga is one of the world's oldest cities and is as old as 2700 years. In 770 BC the Phoenicians founded this city and named it Malaka. This was known as latin Malaca during the period of Carthaginian Empire (6th century BC) and also the Roman Empire. The Arabs called it Mlaqah 800 years after the fall of Roman Empire. In the year 1487 this city was under Spaniards.

The monuments and archaeological remains from various eras the Phoenician, Arabian, Roman and Christian still exist thereby converting this city into an open museum showing 3000 years of history. This city is competing for the title of 2016 European Capital of Culture.

Antonio Banderas, the famous film actor and Pablo Picasso, the famous painter and sculptor were born in this city.

Art and Culture

This city has a number of art galleries; some of them are Municipal Museum, The Atenea, Fundacin Picasso, The Architects College, Colegio de Medicos and Malaga University.

The museums in this city are Art and Popular Customs Museum, Archaeology Museum, Picasso Museum, Contemporary Art Museum and Military Museum.

The fortified solid wall of the fort La Alcazaba is one of the important landmarks in this city. This fortress originated in the 7th century whereas its structure dates back to the 11th century.

Sports and Entertainment

This city has very good music bars and night clubs; there are piano bars where you can relax or dance in the clubs.

Some of the popular sports in this city are hot air ballooning, bird watching, bossaball, boating and yachting, bowling, camping, cycling, fishing, football, Golf, hiking, horse riding, hunting, kite surfing, paddle tennis, polo, rowing and canoeing, skiing, snorkeling & diving, wakeboarding, walking, waterskiing and windsurfing. You can also watch whales and dolphins.

Shopping

There are number of shopping centers where you can buy everything you want under one roof. Items like clothes, food, toiletries, furnishings, electrical items; Do It Yourself Kits, etc. can be bought without any problem.
