Planning A Car Journey Abroad This Summer? Let's Run Through 5 Essential Items You Need

There aren't many car driving experiences better than travelling across the continent

, through various countries and taking in all of the sights and sounds of some of the most beautiful countries in the world.

If you're planning a journey like this this summer, whilst it is always advisable to put together a comprehensive list of what you need to pack, these 5 points should be the essential items that you need to be taking with you as the bare minimum.

1. Money - whilst spending money might be an obvious point to consider, have you taken into account money in case of emergencies? Cash isn't necessary here (or even recommended in some instances), so think about taking with you a credit card - just remember to inform the issuer that you'll be travelling abroad, or they are likely to put a block on it as soon as it is used outside of the UK.

Don't forget the different currencies, too. Yes, a substantial amount of Europe's countries are in the European Union (EU) and use the Euro, but there are several that still use their own currency.

2. Passport - surprisingly, forgetting your passport when going on a car journey is quite a common occurrence, mainly as the use of a passport is linked primarily to holidays that involve travelling by aeroplane.

Remember, though, that every time you cross a border from one country to the next, you're going to have to show your passport, regardless of whether you fly, drive or walk across the border

3.Car insurance - if you drive your car on public roads in the UK, it's a legal requirement for you to have in place a car insurance policy of some kind, whether it's the basic Third Party option or either of the other two more comprehensive choices.

The same rule applies when you're in Europe and you must have a valid car insurance policy that covers you for driving on the continent in place before you set off.

It's worthwhile noting that all car insurance companies, by law, have to offer at least Third Party insurance when you take your car outside of the UK, should you have in place a valid policy with them in the UK. However, it's always worth giving them a call to see how much it would cost to increase this level of cover to Fully Comprehensive, as the extra cover that it will provide is always recommended when you're driving in another country.

4. Breakdown cover - can't think of anything worse than breaking down in a foreign country where you don't speak the local language? How about breaking down in a foreign country where you don't speak the language and don't have any breakdown cover in place?

European breakdown cover comes as a benefit with a lot of Fully Comprehensive car insurance policies and bank accounts these days, so first check to see if you have it in place unknowingly. If you don't, get it - it shouldn't cost a fortune but it could save you hundreds of pounds should you break down on your journey abroad.

5. A comfortable car - with the exception of electric cars, almost any car is capable of travelling long distances, as long as it is checked over thoroughly before the journey begins.

However, if you're planning on covering quite an extensive amount of miles, you are going to want to be as comfortable as you can. For example, whilst a Renault Clio would be suitable for travelling on the continent, any of the models from Land Rover dealers would be much more suitable. Whilst those from Land Rover dealers will generally be more expensive, that extra level of comfort and the additional space that they provide will be very much welcomed once you've set off on your journey.
