Planning A Fun Scavenger Hunt For Children Is Easy!

Simple back yard excursions can be set up for small parties, or grand and outrageous ones held at amusement centers for bigger group events. It can be played individually, or among rivaling teams, who need to find a list of items revolving around a common theme.

Planning a scavenger hunt for kids requires some important considerations. For one, the setting of your hunt should be enclosed (like a back yard), and small enough that kids may find all the items in their list without getting lost. If you are hosting a hunt for toddlers and preschool-aged children, try to tone down the ghouls and goblin decorations so as not to scare the kids away.

Ensure the safety of your scavenger hunt by clearing the game area of any clutter. Pick up any toys or items lying around which kids might trip on, refrain from including Scavenger hunt items that are choking hazards, and take out candles from jack-o-lanterns. Provide the participants with flashlights if they are going to play out in the lawn at nighttime. Set up game rules and guidelines, and keep a close eye on the children throughout the entire game.

When planning the items to put on your scavenger list, think of simple items which are easy to find. A theme focusing on Halloween colors is a great way to get started. Fill your scavenger list with Halloween items in the colors Black and Orange, and have the kids find one item in both colors. Another idea is to fill a list revolving around a particular Halloween character. For example, list down items a witch would use, like a broom stick, a pointed black hat, a wand, and a cauldron.

If you have enough Polaroids or digital cameras available, you can have a photo scavenger hunt for kids. This way, you can put more exciting things on your scavenger list like tombstones, statues in dressed Halloween capes or giant jack-o-lanterns. Instruct the kids to take pictures of these items instead of bringing them over, and the first team to take photos of all the items wins.

At the end of every Scavenger hunt should be an awesome prize that the children can enjoy. The grand prize may be gift certificates to ice cream shops, local arcades, or other fun activities the kids can enjoy. Be sure to purchase small prizes for the other participants as well. Consolation prizes may be composed of stickers, candies, or other Halloween goodies.
