Planning Your Site Seeing Vacation To Philadelphia
If you are going to visit the historic city of Philadelphia
, you need to take advantage of all there is to do and see! There is a countless number of things to do when you are in one of the founding cities of America.
Plan a visit to the Please Touch museum in its new location at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park. Memorial Hall in its own is worth the trip.
This building was built in 1876 for the nation's centennial celebration. Memorial Hall was dedicated by the then President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant.
It then became the Philadelphia Art Museum until 1928. Now completely remodeled for the Please Touch Museum, every space gives wonderful openness and interior architecture like no other children's museum in the country.
The museum is as the name says, a place where kids are encouraged to come and touch and play with everything in sight. From a Alice in Wonderland maze and Historic Carousel to a grocery store designed just for kids, the Please Touch Museum will keep your kids busy for a full day.
Plan a family fun visit to America's oldest zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo. The zoo opened to the public in 1874.
When it opened, the zoo boasted is own wharf on the Schuylkill River. Now, the zoo is reachable by public bus or car (parking is $12).
There are over 1300 rare and endangered animals and over 42 acres to explore at the Philadelphia zoo, so plan to do some walking and allow enough time. The zoo also hosts John Penn's original home, the grandson of the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn.
There are many add-on things to do at the zoo like panning for gems, a train ride, swan boat rides, carousel rides, a camel safari, a balloon ride, and draft horse and pony rides. These extra activities are seasonal and sometimes weather permitting.
Plan a visit to Independence Hall. No trip to this magical city is complete without a trip to the birthplace of our nation, where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Independence Hall is operated by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, who provides free timed tours through the buildings. Tickets for Independence Hall can be picked up at the Independence Visitor's Center for free, or can be reserved in advanced for a fee of $1.50 per ticket by calling between 10 am and 10 pm Eastern time.
It is highly recommended to arrive at the Visitor's Center near 8:30 AM to pick up tickets if they are not reserved during the summer or holidays. Plan a tour of the U.S. Mint production facility.
The city is the home of one of two U.S. Mints in the United States that offers tours of its production facility (Denver, CO is the other). Tours are absolutely free of charge.
The only thing you will need to plan is that cameras, video cameras, and cell phones capable of taking photos are strictly prohibited. Furthermore, there is no place to safely store these items at or near the Mint.
You will either have to leave these items in your hotel room or go through the self guided tour in shifts so someone in your group can hold your items. Plan a visit to see the Liberty Bell.
The world famous Liberty Bell is owned by the City of Philadelphia but is located in The Liberty Bell Center which is operated by the National Park Service. Admission to this visitor's center is free of charge.
The backdrop of the bell is a glass wall with Independence Hall in the background. Plan a visit to the National Constitution Center.
The National Constitution Center is next door to the U.S. Mint and very close to the Liberty Bell Center and Ben Franklin's grave site. The center offers multimedia, sculptures, films, and information about the beginning of the United States and the Constitution.
There is a decent dining area and public restrooms in the center, which is quite a walk to the next closest location to get these amenities. Audio tours are available.
There is a fee for entry. Plan to visit some other attractions in the Old City District.
Visit the Betsy Ross house, Ben Franklin's grave site, or one of many unique shops, art stores, or restaurants in this unique original section of the town. Enjoy a fun filled vacation or both learning and excitement!
