Planting Your Garden With A Garden Seeder

Garden seeder: an essential tool whether a garden is big or small

. It is difficult and painful on the lower back to plant seeds manually. For spring, it is traditional to plant the seeds and the bulbs in your garden on your hands and knees, and it can be really hard to get up after several minutes to an hour. Using a garden seeder may be the only option for you that could not only do wonders to the knees and the lower back, but it could also do wonders on the time saved when planting.

There is the garden seeder which just meters out seeds, the furrowing and the covering will have to be done manually. Then there are the more advanced seeders where the furrowing, metering and covering are all done for you. There are even some that can place fertilizer on the cultivated soil, and some with an arm and tooth which marks the next row to be furrowed.

There is, however, one thing that you have to remember: a garden seeder will not work well with uncultivated land. You may have to till the land if it has not been previously in order for your seeder to function properly. You can either rent a tiller or if you want to get one for your own, good used tillers should also work well.

Another thing to consider before buying a seeder is what type of seeds you are going to plant. Most seeders only function well with larger seeds, so if you are thinking along the lines of carrots, mustard or turnips, you'll have to do those manually, or find a seeder that does. With larger seeds like peas, beans, corn, etc., these seeders can work pretty well and you can be satisfied with the results.

Even if a seeder makes it easier for you to plant seeds, you have to remember that you still have to move it around quite a bit and manipulate it to push the seeds into the furrow. With good maintenance and such, a seeder will last you quite a long time. Brand new equipment such as these may cost up to $100, however, there are also some used seeders being sold.

If you do opt for a second hand or even a third hand seeder, just make sure that you check it out properly before you finally decide to buy it. If you are not familiar with the mechanics of a seeder, make sure that you do bring someone with you who is. Also, it would be best to check out the availability of the replacement parts if it is an old model Otherwise, it would be simpler and cheaper in the end to just buy a new garden seeder rather than spend a lot on trying to make an old thing work.
