In a difficult job market, it's true to say that you can never be too highly trained
. The government seems to recognise this and there has been much talk recently about how university tuition fees should be paid. Currently, there is a system of student loans which are paid back once people enter the job market. Unfortunately, many people finish college with poor degrees in obscure subjects and are no better equipped to get a job than when they started college.
The BBC recently questioned some of the more obscure degrees including "Madonna Studies, Golf Course Management, Pig Enterprise Management and Knitwear". Clearly some degrees are of more use than others. In fact some training is far more practical and relevant to employment opportunities. Not everyone can or wants to write a dissertation on the difference between Madonna's first and second albums and it is difficult to see the use of such study except in the most general terms.
Fortunately there are far shorter courses which will leave you in a position to go straight to work as a skilled artisan earning really good money. Many of these are in the building industry and include wall and floor tiling courses, plumbing courses and plastering courses. Remember to check your local press and job centre to see which skills are most in demand.
When people go to university, they often choose somewhere as far from home as possible. It's all part of the fun for your average eighteen year old and many would say that going to college is more about improving a teenager's social skills than making them more employable.
