Plastic Surgeon: What It Takes To Be A Plastic Surgeon

The gossip columns and reality TV have projected a larger-than-life image on the industry and those who are employed in it

. Plastic surgery is a growing profession and may be known for being a lucrative, but there is much more involved to being a surgeon. If you are considering getting cosmetic work done, here is some insight into surgeons that may help you prepare to interview and select the best one for your procedure.

Motivation

Plastic surgery is an appealing field for its combination of both science and art. While requiring fundamental medical knowledge, it also requires doctors to have an eye for the aesthetics of the human form. When interviewing doctors try asking them about their hobbies - you might be surprised to find how many enjoy fine arts or music in their spare time.

While each doctor is unique, many surgeons will agree that they are motivated by the opportunity to work with their hands and to help and to heal patients. They find satisfaction in the visible results of their work.

Most surgeons do not spend 100% of their time performing "boob jobs" and injecting Botox. A large component of surgery is the reconstructive side, where doctors work to restore patients who are victims of deformities caused by illness or accident. In this unglamorous role they reconstruct mangled limbs, bring healing to burn victims and give a smile to children with born with cleft lips.

Education and training

The path to becoming a surgeon is grueling and requires years of focus and dedication. After four years of undergraduate school and four years of medical school, a doctor goes through at least six years of training in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Or they may do a combination of general surgical training and specific plastic surgery training. These years involve long days in the operating room followed by reports, presentations and other academic work. Finally, they will be ready to spend up to nine months preparing for the written and oral examinations required to become board certified.

On the job

The education process never ends for surgeons who must keep themselves current on advances and new techniques in the field. And of course all patients know that a doctor is not able to hide the operating room all day and quietly go about his or her work.

In addition to spending time on their education, training and job skills, doctors must also cultivate their "bedside manner". The ability to empathize and communicate with patients is critical for a plastic surgeon.
