Even if you've got some good referrals in hand, that's only the beginning of your research. You need to find out if your plastic surgeon has the credentials you want to see. Your doctor will have your appearance and safety in his hands. You want to go to every length to make sure they are competent and qualified hands. Make sure they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. With as much competition as there is nowadays in the field, there's no reason why you should have to settle for anything less.

Your next step should be to contact your state's medical board and see if there has been any malpractice judgments or disciplinary action taken against any of the plastic surgeons you're thinking of hiring for the job. Keep in mind that malpractice suits in and of themselves are not necessarily warning flags. Suing doctors has become somewhat commonplace and few doctors get through their careers without at least a few cases. This is even more true in the case of cosmetic surgery. Disciplinary action from the medical board is another thing entirely. If you see this, think about going elsewhere.
