Plastic Surgery Specialist in Seattle Comments on Breast Reduction Study

As a plastic surgery specialist in Seattle, I often see women at my practice who suffer from having extremely large breasts. While it is true that many women wish to augment or increase their breast size, those with naturally large breasts typically suffer from problems such as back and neck pain, grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, breathing problems, skin irritation, and difficulty participating in physical activities. In addition to the physical limitations that having large breasts has on women, additional and unwanted attention is often a side-effect of large breasts.

A new study performed by the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) shows that while breast reduction surgery is more common in female adults than in younger women, the medical and psychological benefits of the surgery may be the same, if not greater, for adolescents. This study raises the issue of teens and plastic surgery, as well as the benefits of having a breast reduction.

Teens and Plastic Surgery

The study performed by the URMC relates to the general issue of whether teens are old enough for plastic surgery. As a Seattle breast reduction surgeon, I certainly see the value in breast reduction surgery for women of varying ages. However, I also understand that sometimes it is best to wait until the patient has fully-developed before considering a breast reduction. Female adolescents vary in how long it takes for them to fully develop.

It is for this reason that I treat each case differently at my practice. For some of my younger patients, I may feel that they are mature enough for surgery and that the benefits of the procedure largely outweigh any risks. With teenage girls, it is important that they are emotionally and mentally ready for this type of surgery, as it has grave psychological impacts, as shown in the study by the URMC. If a patient is mature enough and I feel that they are a candidate for the procedure, I will consider performing a breast reduction.

Breast Reduction Benefits

Breast reduction surgery can have immense benefits to those who suffer from overly large breasts. For example, a breast reduction can help both back and chest pain. Particularly with teenage girls, overly large breasts may have social implications such as the inability to participate in sports, or unwanted attention from their peers.

In general, the benefits of a breast reduction are similar for women of all ages. In fact, women under the age of 18 may even experience greater benefits because of the social and psychological advantages the procedure can give them. Regardless, I tell all of my patients that whether they are interested in a breast reduction, breast lift, or abdominoplasty in Seattle, before deciding upon a procedure they should schedule a consultation with me so that I can assess them and determine if they are candidates for the desired procedure.
