The Music Staff In general, the music staff (or stave), is a set of five lines placed horizontally with four spaces, each representing a pitch. Each line or space has a note representing the corresponding letter of the keyboard. It may also contain rests and other musical symbols. There are two staves used in playing the pianothe upper staff, known as the treble clef and the lower, known as the bass or F clef. The music staff has 5 basic parts namely brace, bar, bar lines, measure and double bar. The brace is a vertical bow-shaped bracket that is placed before each staff and connects the upper and the lower staves. In piano, it means that the notes must be played simultaneously. The bar and bar lines are use to indicate a segment of time or measure of notes. When we speak of measure, it is defined as the distance between 2 bar lines while the double bar indicates the end of the piece. When a brace and bar connect the G and F clefs, they are called altogether as the grand staff. The grand staff thus is composed of 11 lines and 10 spaces. Now, you may have been asking what the relation is between the keyboard on the piano and the music staff. Simple. The letters of the keyboard correspond to the notes on the staff. It is like a map that pianists use to locate which key to press next. The middle C on the keyboard is also found in the middle of the staff. If the piano notes are located on the upper staff, then the notes will be played above the middle C. If the notes are located on the lower or bass clef, it means that the notes will be played below the middle C. In other words, when the notes on the staff go up, they are moving to the right and when they go down, they are moving to the left. The notes on the G clef are usually played using the right hand and the ones on the F clef are for the left hand. Information overload? Learning piano and learning the music staff might be confusing but it is very important that you start studying the music staff as you start practicing piano.
