Playa del Carmen Retirement – European Lifestyle, But Affordable

Playa del Carmen Retirement European Lifestyle

, But Affordable

On the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen shares many of the wonderful features of the other retirement communities, such as Mayan pyramids, wonderful beaches, the coral reef, and much more. But one feature distinguishes Playa del Carmen retirement from the other choices its distinct European style atmosphere.

Features of this style appear throughout the Riviera Maya (the stretch of beachfront tourist communities running north and south from Playa del Carmen,) but the place where this atmosphere is most prominent is downtown, where retirees can enjoy living in a condo in a quiet, small, residential neighborhood. Several features have helped to give the downtown area this distinct atmosphere.

One is the layout of the town. Small blocks, with narrow roads and low-rise buildings (with limit of 4 stories) snug to the sidewalks define the downtown area. Originally designed as a small village on a perfect grid, downtown has retained this layout and the unique atmosphere that goes with it.

Many towns and cities match this description, however, and do not feel European at all. What has really added the flavor to Playa del Carmen is the large number of Italian residents and investors. Italians are the second largest expat group after Americans. These Italians have opened hotels, restaurants, cafes and gelaterias on the main street in the north half of downtown, and even back in the quieter residential neighborhood, there is an Italian grocery which also sells baguette sandwiches, espresso and cappuccino.

Other than the Italian presence, other features add to the provincial feel of the community. Within walking distance of the residential condo areas, there are fruit and vegetable shops, little breakfast nook restaurants, local bakeries serving Mexican sweet bread and delicious cakes and cafes. A part of this lifestyle is that you can comfortably walk to everything!

While you enjoy this little taste of a European lifestyle in your Playa del Carmen retirement, walking through picturesque roads, and sipping coffee on sidewalk cafes, there are two things that make Playa del Carmen even better. One is that there's variety; in addition to Italian food, there is also Argentinean, Lebonese, Chinese, Japonese, American, French, Thai and German (and probably a few others.) You don't have to worry about getting tired of one style of food.

The other is that it's really affordable. Retiring in Playa del Carmen, you'll find everything from properties to eating out and groceries much more affordable than either back home or, especially, in Europe.
