Industries involved in the safe conduit of hazardous petro-chemicals are always well

advised to seek expert advice on both new and existing pipe transfer networks. It goes without saying that even reducing the likelihood of a potential leak is a precaution more than worth taking.

One aspect of the pipe network that no organisation can ever afford to overlook is the material used in the manufacture of the pipes, pipe fittings and pipe flanges. Many types of steel are dangerously inadequate for the safe containment of hazardous materials. Ordinary carbon steel, for example, even if galvanised, is ultimately highly prone to corrosion from external environmental pressures.

Industrial-strength stainless steels on the other hand, such as alloys that contain nickel and molybdenum, will provide a far more reliable material for use in pipes, flanges and pipe fittings. Expert advice should be sought on which type of stainless steel is most appropriate and cost-effective for a particular application, as various grades exist, including austenite, duplex and super duplex stainless steels.

Industries handling petro-chemical pipe transfers should also seek advice on the various connection compatibility standards that are available for pipes, pipe fittings and flanges. This is particularly important where an upgrading of an old network requires the installation of replacement pipe fittings and flanges.

Pipe fittings and pipe flanges can be available in three different industry standards: the British BS standard; the European PN / DIN standard; and the US ASA / ANSI standard. Some BS and ANSI standard fittings are compatible with one another, but compatibility should always be verified prior to any welding taking place, since even the slightest misalignment in pipe connections can leave a network more vulnerable to corrosion.
