Plumbing Safety Procedures

If you decided to do some of the plumbing installation yourself, it is important to take precautions for self protection. Most of this installation does not put you in danger, but it is always important to follow these safety rules:

1.Rule number one: Shut off the main water line. Let the water run until it stops. This procedure will clear the pipe from water. Important to remember to leave the shut off valve open, during any pipe work.

2.Rule number two: When you are sure that there is a possibility that an electrical device or wires will be involved, keep away from any electrical fixture. Do not get wet when electricity is close to your working area.

3.Rule number three: Identify the pipe that you are going to work on. It is always recommended to make sure you are not working on "live" gas pipes. Your home might have gas pipes and pipes that carry gas to the heating systems.

4.Rule Number four: When working on the gas pipe, windows and doors should be open, in order to provide ventilation, prior to work starting. Shut of the gas, prior to start. Do not ignite any sparks, or "smoke a cigarette" or use of a flame to prepare coffee.

5.Rule number five: Seal temporary the drain pipes. Remember, drain contains odors and hazardous gases that could harm your health.

6.Rule number six: If in any part of the job, you don't know what to do, consult a professional or go to the books. Plumbing installations should work for years without any major problem. You want to do it the right way.

7.Rule number seven: In some of the soldering copper pipe, you are going to use flammable surfaces: protect parts and surfaces that are flammable, use gloves (Not to get burned), handy fire extinguisher is always recommendable.

8.Rule number eight: Do not improvise! Always use the correct tools for the specific Job. Have all you plumbing tools close to you.

9.Rule number nine: Use safety goggles when using the gas torch or when cutting metals. Metal fragments could jump and cause some series problems to your eyes.

10.Rule number ten: Have in hand, a first aid kit. Some alcohol and bandages. Treating a wound immediately can always save time and money.
