Plymouth Hoe Hobnob At A Bay

The city of Plymouth in Southern England is known to have been inhabited since the Bronze Age

, when people settled at Mount Batten. Over the years it has served as an important port linking the UK to USA, France, and other European countries. The city is sandwiched by two rivers, the Plym and Tamar which flow into the bay known as The Sound, where the Plymouth Hoe lies.

Cradled by the rivers and fronted by the waves of the bay that lap on to the shore, the Plymouth Hoe is unquestionably a major tourist destination. The bay derives its name from its curved shape, quite like a garden hoe. The inlet itself hums with activity all day. If the fishing trawlers are not drifting out to sea, a ferry is sure to be speeding out to France or Spain. Naval movements and yacht races are also featured in these waters.

The high-flying landmark at the hoe is the Smeatons Tower. This is a lighthouse, which was relocated brick by brick from its original position on Eddystone Rock a few dozen kilometres away. The tower overlooks the limestone cliffs along the shoreline, which are an important facet of Plymouth. The Royal Citadel, a fortress built to protect the bay in the 17th century still stands preserving its Victorian charm and royal grandeur. At first glance it appears as a hotel in Plymouth Devon, but is still used by the military and guests can tour the inside of the fortress.

The boulevard along the hoe is used for fairs, military displays and open air concerts. Relaxation is in the air around the area and a Plymouth hotel would be the perfect retreat for a discerning traveller. The Copthorne Hotel Plymouth is one such hotel which has left the Victorian environment unmarred and delighted its guests over the years.
