Costa Rica is situated within the Pacific Ring Of Fire, making it an excellent destination if you are interested in volcanoes and seismic activities.

The Ring of Fire is an area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific. The Ring of Fire has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes.

In Costa Rica, several of these active volcanoes are easily accessible to the visitor. This makes Costa Rica an excellent destination for this kind of adventurous travel.

The variety of volcanoes offers the tourist a good choice of different atmospheres and the opportunity to view different kinds of active volcanoes in different areas.

The most famous for its constant visible lava flow is Volcano Arenal. It is bordered by a beautiful lake and adjacent to the town of La Fortuna.

One of the most easily accessible and most popular volcanoes is Volcano Pos. Pos volcano is just a short drive from the international airport and about 1 hour drive from San Jose. This makes it an excellent choice for viewing an active volcano.

Pos Volcano is easily reachable on paved roads in good condition. It is also well sign posted, unlike much of Costa Rica.

Pos Volcano boasts the biggest crater filled with a sulphuric acid lake. The second crater, Botos, is filled with a fresh water lake.

Pos Volcano's main crater is just short walk from the parking area, along a paved road. It is very easy for young and old to enjoy. There is also a museum, art gallery and gift shop on the site.

For those who are more adventurous, a circular path leads you to the second, lake filled crater.

For ease and accessibility, Pos Volcano is the best. It also offers the visitor a clear view of steam escaping from the earth and sometimes even an eruption of ash and smoke.

The one thing to remember about Pos is that it can cloud over very early in the day. The best is to stay overnight in the area and get to the park at 8am when it opens.

My reccommendation for accomodation in the area is Poas Lodge. It is situated just 3 miles from the crater and is the best for quality accommodation at a good price. The service is very good at the lodge.

If you do stya elsewhere and are just visiting Poas volcano for the day, stop in at Poas Lodge to enjoy the view and some excellent food.
