Police Media Relationship

The relationship between Police and Media has always been controversial and concerning topic for both police and media

. But ultimately, the purpose of both the entities is to serve the citizens of the nations. Great professional minds have tried their utmost to bridge the gap between them. How could two institutions with the same purpose end up with such altercation? The rights, safety and liberty entitled to all the citizens are protected and controlled by police where as the media serves to make the citizens aware of the status of those rights, safety, liberty entitled to them, by broadcasting them.

The typical and traditional practice of giving as little information as possible to the public has been quite common for law enforcement. According to the rules the police department is abide to follow the strict policies of confidentiality and secretive handling of cases by not divulging any information to anybody outside the department as uniform itself demands of confidentiality and trust from every officer in it. Media on the contrary have completely opposite method to work as some of their common habits and activities are, firstly they somehow try to or do degrade the credibility of the officers, due to which they are at the top, in the list of enemies of the police department, secondly the fact which is now a days often portrayed in many films that the law enforcement never reveals the actual reason, the activities and decisions undertaken regarding any case story, and finally it is their main motto to be the ear of the public and tell them that actually this is how it is. And that is where lies the biggest difference between these two entities, one relies on secrecies and the other on uncovered informations.

The Police Media Relations / Public information policy got into effect on December 20th 2005 with the purpose of establishing guidelines for absolution and publication of public information to print and broadcast media. The primary responsibility of POIs is to be the primary agent on behalf of the police department during situations of crisis and confusions, coordinate and control the response of media, and call the shots if the accurate informations are delivered to the news media and the community. The position of Public Information Officer (PIO) proves to be of great help when the aerial task of balancing the demands of the media along with the publics right to know regarding any critical and under investigating case, arises. In 2005 the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) recognized five police departments that had achieved outstanding success in the budgetary arena. The local media co-operated with each agency who exhibited a very enduring relationship with them as a result of which it was discovered that a clear positive relationship became successful to gain public confidence and the public accepted budgetary requests. Honesty, veracity and access were cited as the key factors which are all finally needed for secure public approval. So, the Public Information Offices is an aid to the department by which the public are well informed about the activities of the department through various media channels available, including television, internet, newspapers and FM etc.

There are various Law enforcement training institutions providing solutions to save lives, protect infrastructures in critical conditions and very efficiently handling threats of risks. A law enforcement training program is considered to be effective only when it is able to quickly and consistently achieve their aim to protect their nation.
