A tobacco grinder is much like an herb grinder used to grind herbs and spices into small pieces. After properly grinding tobacco, it will burn more evenly when rolled into a cigarette and because it is broken down into small particles, it will not poke holes in rolling paper.
If you break up tobacco with your hands or with scissors prior to rolling it into a cigarette or using it in some other way, you should try using an herb grinder instead. After first using one, anyone who rolls will appreciate how they work, especially a pollinator that incorporates screen to collect smaller tobacco particles. These stylish devices add to the ritual of smoking and make smoking easier and more enjoyable.
There are two basic types of herb grinders that are used for tobacco. The first is a two piece herb grinder used strictly for simple grinding. A two piece herb Grinder also incorporates the use of steel teeth to pulverize tobacco in a grinding chamber. The tobacco is placed inside of the grinder. The top and bottom are placed together and twisted in opposite directions. The twisting motion moves the teeth together and the tobacco gets caught between them and broken down into smaller particles. The size of the particles is determined by how much time was spent grinding. The longer the tobacco has been ground, the smaller the particles will be. This is great for cleaning and separating natural tobacco it also makes your tobacco even and ready for rolling.
The other type is a grinder-pollinator (also referred to simply as a pollinator). A pollinator collects the smaller particulates of tobacco. The way it works is the tobacco is ground by metal teeth. The tobacco falls through holes in the grinding chamber onto the screen below. The smallest tobacco particulates are then passed through a .005 micron stainless steel screen. The accumulated bits of tobacco can be collected and smoked for a stronger more flavorful smoke.
After using your aluminum grinder or pollinator for a while, there will be some build-up of material that may cause the unit to work less effectively. Find a container with an airtight top. The container must be large enough to hold the parts of the grinder or pollinator. Fill the container with enough high % rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol 90% or higher) to cover the parts you want to clean. Do not use plastic or PVC containers for this purpose. Plastic and PVC will release toxic chemicals when brought into contact with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). Glass is probably the material for a container. Soak the parts in the alcohol for 5-10 minutes. Use a q-tip to clean any stubborn spots. If you have a pollinator, be gentle and use a toothbrush to clean the screen itself (if necessary).
